Bureaux is an award-winning architecture and interior design studio with a reputation for crafted, authentic and character-filled buildings, interiors, exhibitions and furniture. The studio’s work has been widely published, both in New Zealand and internationally.
Founded in 2010 by Registered Architects Jessica Barter and Maggie Carroll, Bureaux has produced a diverse body of work that ranges across housing, cultural, retail and hospitality projects. While these projects may vary in type and scale, the practice employs a personal approach that ensures each work focuses on the needs of clients and future users. Collectively, Bureaux projects are cohesive, well planned and finely detailed – a seamless and sophisticated marriage of the artisanal and the technical.
Jessica and Maggie are also actively engaged with the wider architectural profession in New Zealand and overseas. In 2015-16, Maggie and Jess’s architectural knowledge and creative energy is an important ingredient in the success of ‘Future Islands’, New Zealand’s national exhibition at the prestigious Venice Architecture Biennale. They are also members of the New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA), representatives on the NZIA Auckland Branch committee and, as mentors and teachers, involved in the education of prospective architects through the NZIA’s Graduate Development Programme. In 2014-15, as organisers of Auckland Architecture Week, Jess and Maggie developed a popular programme of events that allowed a wide range of people – the public at large as well as professionals – to enjoy a comprehensive range of design-themed events.
Bureaux’s team of eight architects and designers work out of a High St studio. To assist on selected projects, Bureaux has developed a collaborative network of skilled and trusted designers, craftspeople and builders.
Bureaux Ltd is a registered practice with the New Zealand Institute of Architects.
